Some of my winning poetry pieces
I won the poetry contest of
Joseph "Silly" Sottile
January 2010 Poetry Winner:
Title: I Collect
I collect money to give the poor people
Then my world will be rich.
I collect knowledge to become a scientist,
Then my knowledge can be spread all over the world.
I collect pieces of wood to make a huge ladder
Then I can climb up to the moon.
I collect feathers to make a huge bird
Then I too can fly in the sky.
I collect fabulous gems to decorate my house
Then it looks like a palace.
I collect all these things to make me happy.
(Congratulations Sehen! I like the pattern of your poem and the images that you created. I also like the fact that you chose to use my last month's recipe for writing a poem for this month's issue. That was clever of you! Thanks for sharing it. Sehen, you are a brave, young poet with a bright future ahead of you as a writer!)

Title: Teacher
(Acrostic poem)
Teaching good things
Educating us in every thing
All through the year
Caring for all of us
Helping us to study
Enjoyable companion, she is
Really fun indeed
(Joe's commentary: This acrostic poem was written for the teachers day — 06/10/2010. I am sure the teacher enjoyed the tribute. Congratulations! You are a two time winner, Sehen!)

All of us are waiting for this day
Bells are ringing all over
Candy bars everyone gets
Delighted children run everywhere
Everyone celebrates this special day
Feeling happiness all around
Getting a lots of presents
Houses are decorated
In and out people go
Jesus, the Christ child was born on this special day
Keeping a lot of glory
Lighted candles illuminate houses
Making cards for everyone
No end of happiness
Opening presents and being surprised
People are pleasant
Quietly huddled at night
Rejoicing this day
Sharing gifts with others
Talking excitedly
Unforgettable day
Very beautiful sceneries are everywhere
Winter is coming
X-mas trees stand in the house
Young and old enjoy this day
Zeal we show at this time
(Joe's commentary: Congratulations to Sehen Dilkush Gamhewa. He a three-time contest winner! The above alphabet poem certainly has the spirit of Christmas built right into it! It's quite a challenge to write such a long poem. Sehen has done a superb job! Thank you, Sehen.)

When I was 6 years I wrote the following poems and
I was glad to see Sri lankan flag among other flags in the Loris web: http://www.loriswebs.com/youngpoets/sehen.html
Title: Moon
The Moon is shinning in the night
Giving bright light to the world
Twinkling stars make her proud
Little children love these sights
Without moon the sky looks dark
Stars look sad without moon
The Moon is shinning in the night
Giving bright light to the world
Twinkling stars make her proud
Little children love these sights
Without moon the sky looks dark
Stars look sad without moon
Title: My dad
I love my dad very very much
He is very vey good
When I cry he wipes my tears
When I laugh he laughs with me
Oh such wonders make me happy
Now and then he is the best father in the whole world.
He is very vey good
When I cry he wipes my tears
When I laugh he laughs with me
Oh such wonders make me happy
Now and then he is the best father in the whole world.
Title: If you were and I were
If you were a deer
And I were a cheetah,
I would eat you up,
And leave a portion for my mate.
If you were a canyon
And I were the water,
I would crack you up,
And make a river path.
If you were a cave
And I were an ape man,
I would paint you up,
Till you would sneeze.,
My Dino world

Spinosaurus was a beast
That had a very big feast
It walked the earth on its mighty toes
Giving every one very big blows
Diplodocus had a very long tail
And could give out a loud wail
It had a long neck as well
And could reach tall trees very well
Triceratops had three long horns
And could give mean frowns
It could run very fast
And it never became the last
Tyrannosaurus was very large
And gave a very big charge
It had terrifying teeth
And could tear the meat sheath
That had a very big feast
It walked the earth on its mighty toes
Giving every one very big blows
Diplodocus had a very long tail
And could give out a loud wail
It had a long neck as well

Little Miss Keet

Little miss Keet
Sat on her seat
She took the cake
She had to bake
She opened the oven door
And kept the cake on the oven floor
She closed the oven door
And stood near dreaming about wild boar
After the oven door opened
The cake stood out while the oven stood unopened
She took the cake onto the table
And started to read a fable
But by the time she had read her book
Her cat was on the plate with a happy look
